Common Questions
- The screen just shows a dash. What's wrong?
- A dash means Beater Meter is still waiting for a GPS fix. This can take up to a minute the first time, and needs a reasonable view of the sky — it won't work in a parking garage or a tunnel. Also check that location access is enabled in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Beater Meter.
- How do I switch to km/h?
- Tap the unit label underneath the number. It toggles between MPH and KM/H.
- Why does it read 0 when I'm rolling slowly?
- GPS drifts by a few miles per hour even when you are completely stopped. Beater Meter reads a steady 0 below about 3 mph so the number doesn't jitter while you sit at a light. It picks up again as soon as you are genuinely moving.
- Why does the number change color?
- The digits turn amber above 65 mph and red above 80 mph, so you can register your speed in peripheral vision without reading the number.
- Is my speed accurate?
- Beater Meter uses GPS, so the reading is close but approximate, and it updates about once per second. It is not a substitute for your vehicle's own speedometer — always follow your car's instruments and posted speed limits.
- Does it use a lot of battery?
- GPS and keeping the screen awake both use power, so plug in on longer drives. Beater Meter stops using location entirely as soon as you leave the app.
